Your Website Is Talking About You Right Now

Every visitor who lands on your website forms an opinion about your business within three seconds. Not about your product. Not about your price. About whether you are trustworthy, professional, and worth their time.

An outdated website silently communicates: "This business doesn't invest in itself. Why would they invest in me?"

Here are five clear signs your website may be driving customers away — and what to do about each one.

Sign 1: Your Website Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load

Speed is not a technical detail. It is a business problem.

Research from Google shows that 53% of mobile visitors leave a website that takes more than three seconds to load. They don't wait. They press back and click your competitor's result instead.

Additionally, Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. A slow website doesn't just lose visitors — it ranks lower in search results, meaning fewer people even find it in the first place.

How to check: Go to pagespeed.web.dev and enter your URL. A score below 70 on mobile needs attention urgently.

Common causes: Uncompressed images, cheap shared hosting, outdated code, too many plugins (especially on WordPress sites built years ago).

Sign 2: It Doesn't Work Properly on Mobile

Over 70% of web traffic in India comes from mobile phones. If your website requires pinching, zooming, horizontal scrolling, or tiny tappable buttons on a phone — you are losing the majority of your visitors before they even read a word about your business.

A website that was built before 2019 is very likely not truly mobile-optimised. "Mobile responsive" means different things at different levels of quality. Open your website right now on your own phone. Honestly ask: would a stranger trust this business based on what they see?

Sign 3: Your Last Update Was More Than 2 Years Ago

Google considers freshness a ranking signal. A website that hasn't been updated since 2020 or 2021 tells Google — and your visitors — that perhaps you are not active, or not paying attention.

Beyond SEO, an outdated website shows old prices, discontinued services, outdated team photos, and expired promotions. Every piece of stale content erodes the trust a visitor might otherwise have in your business.

If your copyright footer still says "© 2019," a visitor who notices this wonders: are these people even still in business?

Quick fix: At minimum, update your homepage content, refresh your service descriptions, and add a few recent client results or testimonials.

Sign 4: Your Contact Form Doesn't Work

This is more common than you would believe. Hundreds of businesses have contact forms that silently fail — submissions are sent but never arrive in the owner's inbox. The form shows "message sent" to the visitor, but the email never comes through.

This can happen because of email configuration issues, spam filter blocks, or a change in hosting settings. The result: genuine customer enquiries disappear into the void, and you never know.

How to check: Fill out your own contact form right now using a different email address. If you don't receive the message within a few minutes, your form is broken.

Also check: is your WhatsApp button linked correctly? Does your phone number click-to-call on mobile?

Sign 5: You Are Not Getting Enquiries from Google

If your website exists but brings you zero or near-zero enquiries from search engines, it is a strong signal that something is wrong — either with your SEO, your design, or both.

A healthy business website in a competitive local market should be generating at least a handful of Google-sourced enquiries every month. If yours isn't, the reasons typically come down to:

  • No SEO setup — Google can't find you or rank you
  • Poor user experience — visitors come but leave immediately
  • No clear call to action — visitors don't know what to do next
  • Outdated or thin content — nothing that earns Google's trust

How to check: Set up Google Search Console (free). It shows you exactly how many people are finding your site through Google searches, which keywords trigger your site, and where you rank.

What to Do If Your Website Has These Problems

If you recognised your website in two or more of these signs, the good news is: every one of these problems is fixable. The question is whether to fix the existing site or start fresh.

As a general rule: if your site is older than 3 years, built on an outdated platform, or fundamentally slow on mobile, a rebuild is almost always more cost-effective than patching. A new site built properly from the start will outperform a patched old site every time.

If your site is relatively recent and these are isolated issues, targeted fixes may be sufficient.
